A couple of folks have been dishing out the flak over my alleged "fan boy persona" and I think I should just throw this out there. You know, in case there are more of you who think this is an act. The truth is simply this: In the last couple of years, I've gotten to a point as a writer where people actually notice my writing. I've even recently begun to pay my bills solely on my writing income. That's a pretty big deal to me on its own given the eight previous years I spent struggling to convince the industry and the readers at large that I was, in fact, a real writer.

Now I often find myself on a panel, answering questions about writing and what-not, and seated next to me are no less than the people who wrote the books that influenced me in profound ways when I read them at age fifteen, or twenty, or twenty-five... and so on. Suddenly, and against my inner critic's better judgment, I'm right next to these folks in the capacity of a peer. Sometimes, I get excited and start telling them how awesome they are. Most times, though, I bite my tongue and conduct myself in a fairly professional manner, then I go talk about how awesome it was to meet them later on, when they're not around to be embarrassed by my gushing.

This isn't an act. It isn't even something I play up. This is just how it is for me, having become a piece of the same creative community I spent most of my life seeing as a mythical, distant and unattainable group to which only much better writers than I belonged.

Some Times, a Blog Title is Just a Blog Title

The JagerQuiz, which is my weekly pub quiz, really took off last night. I'm glad to see it gaining such momentum in such little time, especially since putting it together (along with a host of other concerns, namely IP issues) left me a week behind on new chapters of Prom Queen of the Damned. So for this week's chapter (which, as many of you will have noticed, is actually two days behind) I've merged the next two chapters into one.

And it seems to work. Granted, I haven't put it out there yet so I don't know what the reader feedback will be like, but as I'm going over it this afternoon, it seems to me like a pretty solid installment.

Also got my information in to the organizers of the April 6 Literary Death Match, in which I'll be teaming up with the likes of Dessa and Dennis Cass on the judging panel. The three of us will be reviewing the performances of John Jodzio, Darci Schummer, Brian Beatty and John Gordon to determine who is the ultimate champion of performance lit here in the MPLS. Should be a lot of fun.

The Morning Show of Your Dreams
Sunday 14 March 2010 at 3:00 pm

It's just this sort of thing that makes me want to have interns of my very own. You know, someone to do the trailers for Idiosynchronicity. Alex Clark did this for the 89.3 morning show with Jill & Steve. Enjoy...

The Glamorous World of Freelance Writing
Thursday 11 March 2010 at 11:31 am

And now that I've got the website back in operation, it's time to get on to some paid work.

As there are no giant assignments in front of me, I'll spend the day writing this sort of thing, cause the pay is actually pretty decent and I've got mouths to feed. Barking, meowing, biting mouths.

JagerCon's New Opening Act
Thursday 11 March 2010 at 11:15 am

There are some clueless hipsters out there who refer to Tuesday at Club Jager disparagingly as "Nerd Night." Personally, I think we're all just a bit old to keep socializing as if we were still in seventh grade, but to each their own.

That said, Nerd Night introduces the new warm-up for the weekly 10pm show. Come in at 8 for the JagerQuiz. Unless you're one of those disparaging hipsters. Those guys can stay in Uptown and go line dancing at Cowboy Slim's.

The Hundred Year Revolution

I first met Granny D in 2000 when she showed up in Minneapolis to campaign for the Green Party and, some months later (the day after the election, actually) I phoned her up for a chat about it all. That whole conversation is recorded and archived here.

"I seem to be having this tremendous difficulty with my lifestyle."

Still waiting for the domain to actually point to where the new site is hosted. In the meantime, nobody's reading me. I could say anything I want right now and no one would know... hmmm.
